I teach about 35 students in a friendly home-based studio in Willow Grove, Pa. I have been a piano teacher for twenty years. Since 2002, I have taught a program called Simply Music, which offers a uniquely different approach to traditional piano lessons.

Simply Music begins as a 'playing-based' program. This means the reading process is temporarily delayed until a student can play many short songs from memory in a wide variety of styles. Repertoire includes blues, classical, contemporary and accompaniment styles. Songs are taught directly onto the keys in a way that is natural and easy to understand.

Using this hands-on approach, students are able to play many great-sounding songs from memory in a relatively short period of time. The joy and satisfaction of playing songs right away makes it highly likely that a student will want to continue with lessons. Once confidence is gained in their ability to play, students learn to read and write music.

Playing songs before learning to read music is a very natural way to learn, just as we speak our native language for years before learning to read. Students are not frustrated by having to learn notes, rhythm, dynamics, fingering and phrasing at the same time as they are learning what to play.

At Hands Together Piano Studio, school-age students may attend informal performance classes which offer an opportunity to play for other students in a relaxed environment. In June there is a large family recital where family and friends are invited. For students who are shy about performing, however, recitals are not required.

About 20% of students here are adults. Most came as total beginners. Some have taken lessons as children.

Hands Together Piano Studio also offers programs for very young beginners. Play-a-Story teaches students as young as four to learn piano through improvisation. WunderKeys teaches students piano preparatory skills to students as young as three.

Anyone who is interested in lessons can come to Hands Together Piano Studio for a free 30-minute informational session. You can meet the teacher, see the materials, listen to the songs and get answers to any questions you may have.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Pittsburgh and took graduate courses in music at Temple University. I have studied piano with many fine teachers and continue to take lessons myself to this day. I also participate in educational activities through the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and other teacher groups.

I received permanent certification through the MTNA in 2005 and was president of my local chapter for four years. Piano is the joy of my life. I feel fortunate to be able to teach piano and to pass on the gift of music to my students.

Title:  My son's progress is really amazing!
Testimonial:  My son has been with Cheryl for over two years and watching him progress is really amazing. He is reading music, creating his own work and showing a new self confidence that is wonderful. Cheryl is patient, yet doesn't let my son settle for not doing his best, which is very important. You feel that with every lesson comes new knowledge, which is great. I love that she instills in her students that music isn't easy - you must work hard. However, the rewards are well worth it. I have recommended this studio to others and have praised the Simply Music technique that Cheryl uses in her lessons."
