Joyce Grantham

Piano Teacher Walnut Creek, California
Joyce Grantham, a native of Alameda California, began her piano studies with her mother at the age of 3 1/2, and had her first lesson with teacher Shirley Lewis Adams of Berkeley, on her 4th birthday. She played her first solo recital at the age of 5, after which Mrs. Adams presented her in a solo recital every year. At age 11 she was accepted as a student of Robert Vetlesen, Director of the Academy of Music in San Francisco, and a concert pianist who had studied with Schnabel, von Sauer, Bartok and Josef and Rosina Lhevinne. At 12 she played a benefit concert for the Academy of Music Scholarship Fund at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. The next year she was invited to perform at the Academy of Arts in Honolulu, as the first child artist to play there. She made her San Francisco concert debut at the Marine's Memorial Theater at 14, and appeared with the Oakland Symphony in their Woodminster Concert Series that same year, the youngest artist to have appeared on that series. The following year she appeared again with the Oakland Symphony, was soloist in two concerts with the San Francisco Symphony, and returned to the Marine's Memorial Theater to perform five Beethoven Sonatas in a single concert. She also made several appearances on local public radio and television programs that year, and began teaching young beginners at her home in Alameda. At 18 she made her New York concert debut which was broadcast live over WQXR-FM, New York\'s classical music station. Joyce graduated with a degree in Music from Mills College, where she was a Hellman Scholar, and studied with Bernhard Abramowitsch, Nathan Rubin, Morton Subotnick, Darius Milhaud and Leon Kirchner. She won the Piano Performace Prize in her freshman year, the Mozart Concerto Competition in her sophomore year, and the Composition Prize in her senior year. While at Mills she taught in the preparatory music school, where she received coaching in piano pedagogy from the Director, James Beail, and where one of her first pupils was Donna Stoering, the now world renowned concert artist, and founder of music festivals and concert series worldwide. After college Joyce performed in Europe, collaborated with other instrumentalists and singers, and began to concentrate more on teaching. Her teaching experience includes all ages and levels, from beginners as young as 3 to practicing music teachers. She has also coached other instrumentalists and singers. Her students have received high praise from adjudicators, and several have gone on to teaching and performing careers, and careers in other music related fields. Lessons are tailored to the individual student and include theory, music history, sight reading, aural skills, music analysis and composition, as well as piano technique, interpretation and improvisation. In music one size does not fit all, so Joyce encourages her students to explore styles of music other than classical. Students may participate in student recitals, and student programs of MTAC, MTNA/CAPMT and National Guild of Piano Teachers. Joyce believes that everyone is born with music in their soul, and that they deserve the opportunity to experience the joy of expressing it and sharing it with family and friends, and the wider world if they choose. Her joy is in guiding them on the pate of musical discovery, and sharing it with them. To schedule an interview/audition, call 925-938-5284 or email carats@astound.net.
