Cooley Music Studio
Sharon Cooley
Piano Teacher Biglerville, Pennsylvania
Sharon Swisher Cooley has been in love with music for as long as she can remember, so she began her study of piano at the age of 6 years. Born and raised in the Gettysburg area, Sharon knew she wanted to teach piano from a very early age. Sharon holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from York College of Pennsylvania. While at YCP, she accompanied and sang with the York College Choirs, the York Symphony Chorus, accompanied the Jazz Band and toured with the Madrigal choir. Following college, she opened her music studio in the Biglerville area, where she now teaches piano, voice and organ lessons. She has served three churches over the years as organist and choir director. Presently she is the choir director at Zion U.C.C. in Arendtsville and co-organist at St. Paul’s U.C.C. in New Oxford. She also directed and accompanied the St. Paul’s Singers, a local gospel men’s quartet, for over 24 years and organized and directed the New Oxford Community Messiah Choir. Sharon still enjoys accompanying and performing professionally. Sharon was awarded the Outstanding Young Educator Award in 1991 by the Bermudian Jaycees, and the Honorary European Citizenship award in 1997 in Norcia, Italy. She served on the Partnership Committee of the American Council for International Studies in Boston, MA where she assisted in developing fine arts performance tours abroad. In her spare time she and her husband organize Broadway trips and adult group tours. She is a substitute teacher at Biglerville High School. She loves to sing with her talented husband, Kevin. A major highlight of her career is being able to showcase her best students in Performance Tours abroad. Sharon is active in the Eastern Star (a Masonic organization) which she has served as organist and choir director (directing a 100+ voice choir) for the state of Pennsylvania. Periodically, when she had 8-10 outstanding students, we will organize an out-of-country performance tour. Students must qualify by meeting many requirements to prove their musical ability. This trip is an honor and a privilege. Each student must display a command of the piano/voice and possess a willingness to continuously improve in technique and interpretation. Once chosen, the student must participate in many rehearsals and will perform a public concert prior to the trip. Families and friends may travel with the students. In the past my students have performed a concert in the 13th century city of Norcia, Italy to a standing room only crowd in the Town Hall. The next tour took us to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Northern Italy where we performed in Vienna and also in Strasburg in Mirabel Gardens - a beautiful location where the “Sound of Music” was made. Several years later we went to England, Ireland, and Scotland where we performed with another music studio in the beautiful century old Kingston Parish Church near London. Then came the cruise to Hawaii where the students performed a “Broadway” themed concert on board the NCL Pride of Aloha. Presently we are working on preparing students to perform in Milan, Italy in 2015.
